What is the difference between a fee-only, fee-based, and commission-based advisor?

Fee-only advisors are compensated exclusively by the client—usually through an hourly rate, a flat financial planning fee, or a percentage of Assets Under Management (AUM)—and they do not accept product commissions. Fee-based advisors primarily charge a direct fee based on AUM but may still receive commissions for specific products, such as life insurance. Commission-based advisors are paid by financial institutions when they sell you a mutual fund, insurance policy, or other financial product. [Customization Tip: State clearly which category your firm falls into immediately following this definition.]

How much does a financial advisor cost in Canada?

In Canada, advisory fees depend on the service model. For full-service wealth management, advisors typically charge an AUM (Assets Under Management) fee ranging from 0.5% to 2% of your portfolio value annually. Often, this operates on a tiered structure where the percentage decreases as your portfolio grows. Alternatively, some planners charge a flat or hourly rate for creating a standalone financial plan. We believe in complete transparency, and all our fees are disclosed in writing before you sign any paperwork. Depending on the account type (such as non-registered accounts), a portion of your advisory fee may also be tax-deductible.

Are you a fiduciary, and are you legally required to act in my best interest?

Unlike in other jurisdictions, the term “fiduciary” in Canada is legally tied to specific registrations, such as Portfolio Managers with discretionary trading authority. However, as professionals holding leading industry designations (such as the CFP®), we adhere to a rigorous standard of professional conduct. This means we are bound by an ethical code to put your interests first, disclose any potential conflicts of interest, and provide advice that is objectively suited to your unique financial situation.

What is the difference between a Financial Advisor and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP)?

In many Canadian provinces, “Financial Advisor” is a broad title that historically has not been strictly protected or required standardized education. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), on the other hand, is an internationally recognized professional designation. To earn the CFP® mark, an individual must complete rigorous coursework, pass comprehensive national exams, and fulfill ongoing continuing education requirements. Working with a CFP® ensures your advice comes from a credentialed expert trained in holistic wealth management.

Do I need a minimum net worth or portfolio size to become a client?

Our firm is structured to provide the highest level of service to individuals and families with complex financial needs. While we do specialize in managing significant wealth, we evaluate relationships based on mutual fit rather than just a strict asset minimum. We frequently work with younger professionals, business owners, and near-retirees who require comprehensive planning. Please reach out for a complimentary discovery call to determine if our services align with your current life stage.

[Customization Tip: If you have a hard minimum—e.g., $500,000—insert that specific number here.]

Do you provide comprehensive financial planning (tax, estate, retirement) or just investment management?

We believe that managing investments in a vacuum is a disservice. A strong portfolio is only one piece of the puzzle. Our wealth management process is comprehensive. We build holistic strategies that include tax mitigation, retirement cash-flow projections, estate planning strategies, debt management, and risk/insurance analysis. We ensure every dollar you invest is aligned with your broader life goals.

Will you collaborate with my accountant and lawyer?

Yes. Effective wealth management requires a team approach. Decisions made in your investment portfolio can significantly impact your tax liabilities and estate plans. We act as the “quarterback” for your financial life, proactively coordinating with your CPA, corporate accountants, and estate attorneys to ensure all your professionals are working in unison toward your goals.

What is your investment philosophy?

Our investment philosophy is grounded in patience, diversification, and evidence-based planning. We do not try to time the market or chase short-term fads. Instead, we focus on what we can control: asset allocation, risk management, minimizing fees, and tax efficiency. By understanding your specific timeline and risk tolerance, we build a resilient, globally diversified portfolio designed to weather market volatility and achieve long-term growth.

How often will we communicate, and what kind of reporting will I receive?

Communication is the cornerstone of our client relationships. You will receive clear, transparent reports detailing your portfolio’s performance, asset allocation, and all associated fees. We formally review your financial plan and investments on a regular schedule (typically quarterly or semi-annually), but we are also available year-round to consult with you on major life events, market concerns, or any shifting financial priorities.

Are financial advisors actually worth the cost?

We believe our value goes far beyond simply selecting investments. While robust portfolio management is essential, industry research consistently shows that the true value of an advisor comes from comprehensive financial planning. This includes tax-minimization strategies, optimizing your retirement withdrawals, structural estate planning, and perhaps most importantly, providing behavioral coaching to keep you from making emotional decisions during volatile markets. Our goal is to ensure that the measurable value of our tax and planning advice significantly outweighs the fees you pay.

How do you report my portfolio's return net of all fees?

Transparency is a core value of our practice. We provide quarterly reporting that clearly illustrates your portfolio’s performance net of all fees—meaning the return you see is exactly what you keep. Every statement includes a straightforward breakdown of our advisory fees and any underlying product costs (such as ETF or mutual fund MERs). We also compare your performance against appropriate market benchmarks so you can easily track your progress.

How much cash flow or income will my portfolio generate in retirement?

Transitioning from saving for retirement to drawing an income requires a completely different strategy. We build custom retirement income plans that project exactly how much cash flow your portfolio can safely generate each month without depleting your capital prematurely. We focus on creating a tax-efficient “paycheque” by strategically sequencing withdrawals from your RRSPs/RRIFs, TFSAs, and non-registered accounts, while factoring in your CPP and OAS entitlements.

Do I need a financial advisor near me, or can I work with you virtually?

While we love meeting our clients face-to-face at our office, geography is no longer a barrier to receiving top-tier financial advice. We operate a fully modern, paperless practice and are equipped to hold comprehensive strategy sessions via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. We are fully licensed in [Province(s)], and frequently work with clients who live across the country or who spend part of the year out of province.

[Customization Tip: Ensure you list the specific provinces where you are registered to provide advice.]

Who is on your advisory team, and who will be my main point of contact?

When you work with us, you aren’t just getting a single advisor; you are backed by an entire team of professionals. Your Lead Advisor will be your primary point of contact for high-level strategy, major life decisions, and portfolio reviews. However, you will also be introduced to our Associate Advisors and Client Service team, who handle daily operations, document requests, and quick administrative questions. This ensures you always get a prompt, accurate response, even if your Lead Advisor is in meetings.

Who is your typical client, and do they have similar needs to mine?

We specialize in working with [Target Audience, e.g., incorporated business owners, medical professionals, or families approaching retirement] who require more than just basic investment advice. Our typical clients have complex financial lives and are looking for a dedicated partner to simplify their affairs, minimize their tax burden, and protect their wealth for the next generation. If you fall into this category, you will benefit from the specific expertise we have developed solving problems exactly like yours.

What is your succession plan if you retire, leave the firm, or are unavailable?

Financial planning is a multi-generational commitment, and we have structured our firm to ensure continuity for your family. We operate as a team-based practice, meaning multiple advisors are familiar with your file and financial plan. Furthermore, our firm has a formal, written succession plan in place so that in the event of an advisor’s retirement or unexpected absence, your portfolio and financial roadmap will continue to be managed seamlessly without any interruption in service.

Do you receive any kickbacks, trailing commissions, or third-party compensation?

We are fiercely protective of our objectivity. As [fee-only / fee-based] advisors, our compensation comes directly from the transparent fee you pay us. We do not accept hidden trailing commissions, kickbacks, or incentives from third-party mutual fund companies to push their proprietary products. If our firm facilitates an insurance policy for you where a standard commission is paid by the insurer, we disclose that compensation fully and upfront before you sign anything.

How do you manage risk and what kind of volatility should I expect?

Market volatility is a normal and expected part of investing. Instead of trying to time the market—which is historically proven to fail—we manage risk through deep diversification and rigorous asset allocation. Before we invest a single dollar, we take you through an extensive risk assessment to understand your financial capacity for loss and your emotional tolerance for volatility. We then design a portfolio that balances the growth you need to reach your goals with the stability required to let you sleep at night.

Can you help me with tax planning and maximizing government benefits?

Absolutely. Tax planning is integrated into everything we do. We proactively look for opportunities to reduce your annual tax bill through income splitting, strategic charitable giving, and corporate structuring. For our retiring clients, we run detailed projections to determine the mathematically optimal age to start taking CPP and OAS to maximize your lifetime government benefits while minimizing the risk of the OAS clawback.

How hard is it to switch financial advisors, and will there be penalties?

Switching advisors is much easier than most people think. Once you sign the initial onboarding paperwork with us, our back-office team handles 100% of the transfer process electronically. You do not even need to have an awkward “breakup” conversation with your current advisor. While your outgoing institution may charge a standard transfer-out fee (usually around $150), we typically reimburse this cost for new clients transferring accounts above our minimum threshold. The only potential penalty to be aware of is if you hold older mutual funds with Deferred Sales Charges (DSCs); we will analyze your current holdings beforehand to ensure you don’t face unexpected fees.

Where is my money actually held, and is it safe if your firm goes out of business?

We do not hold your money directly. Your assets are held securely in your name at an independent, third-party custodian (such as National Bank Independent Network or Fidelity Clearing Canada). This provides a strict separation between the firm advising on your wealth and the institution holding it. Furthermore, because our custodian is a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), your assets are protected against the insolvency of the custodian. CIPF generally provides up to $1 million in coverage for all your general accounts combined, plus an additional $1 million in separate coverage for registered retirement plans like your RRSP and RRIF.

[Customization Tip: Insert the specific name of your carrying broker/custodian in the parentheses.]

Am I locked into a long-term contract if I sign on as a client?

No. Wealth management is a voluntary, at-will relationship. While we build financial plans designed to unfold over decades, you are never locked into a long-term contract. If you feel that our services are no longer the right fit for your family, you can terminate the relationship and transfer your assets to a new institution at any time without paying punitive cancellation fees to our firm.

Can I hire you for a one-time financial plan without transferring my investments?

Option A – Wealth Management Only: Our firm operates exclusively on a comprehensive wealth management model. We believe that to properly execute and monitor a financial plan, we must actively manage the underlying investments. Therefore, we do not offer one-time, standalone financial plans for a flat fee.

Option B – Fee-for-Service/Advice-Only: Yes. We recognize that some clients are comfortable managing their own ETF portfolios but still want professional guidance on tax strategy, retirement withdrawal sequencing, and estate planning. We offer a flat-fee “Advice-Only” engagement where we build your comprehensive roadmap, and you execute the trades yourself.

[ Customization Tip.  Choose whichever options applies to your business. ]

Do you work with incorporated professionals and business owners?

Yes, this is a core specialty of our practice. Managing wealth inside a Canadian Controlled Private Corporation (CCPC) requires an entirely different rulebook than personal investing. We help business owners navigate the complexities of the passive income grind, integrate their holding companies with their operating companies, optimize salary versus dividend compensation strategies, and prepare for the eventual sale of their business using the Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption (LCGE).

Can you help me minimize probate fees and structure my estate for my children?

Absolutely. Depending on your province, probate taxes and executor fees can take a significant bite out of your estate, and the final tax return on a collapsed RRSP/RRIF can easily be taxed at the highest marginal rate. We work alongside your estate lawyer to structure your wealth efficiently. This includes ensuring proper beneficiary designations on registered accounts, exploring joint-ownership strategies, and utilizing permanent life insurance or trust structures to transfer your wealth to your heirs privately and tax-effectively.

Do you also sell life, disability, and critical illness insurance?

Protecting your income and your estate is just as important as growing your investments. We are dual-licensed to provide comprehensive risk management strategies, including term and permanent life insurance, disability coverage, and critical illness policies. By integrating your insurance and investment portfolios under one roof, we ensure you aren’t paying for overlapping coverage and that your family is fully protected against worst-case scenarios.

[Customization Tip: If you do not sell insurance directly, adjust this to explain that you have a trusted network of independent insurance brokers you coordinate with.]

Why should I hire an advisor instead of using a robo-advisor or buying ETFs myself?

Robo-advisors and DIY brokerages are fantastic tools for automating your savings when you are in the early stages of building wealth. However, as your net worth grows, so does the complexity of your financial life. An algorithm cannot tell you how to extract money from your corporation tax-efficiently, when exactly to start taking CPP, or how to structure your estate to minimize probate. More importantly, DIY platforms cannot provide the behavioral coaching required to stop investors from panic-selling during normal and periodic market corrections. You hire us to manage the complexity and protect you from costly emotional mistakes.

Do you offer Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) or ESG portfolios?

Yes. We believe your portfolio should align with your personal values. For clients who request it, we can design specialized portfolios utilizing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria. This allows us to screen out specific sectors (like fossil fuels, tobacco, or weapons manufacturing) and proactively invest in companies leading the way in clean energy, equitable labor practices, and sustainable corporate governance, without sacrificing long-term returns.

What happens in our first meeting, and what documents do I need to bring?

The first meeting—often called a Discovery Call—is simply a casual conversation. You do not need to bring a binder full of tax returns or investment statements. This meeting is designed to see if we are a mutual fit. We will ask you about your financial goals, what keeps you up at night, and what you are looking for in an advisor. In turn, we will explain our process, our fees, and how we might be able to help. If we both agree it’s a good fit, we will then schedule a follow-up meeting and ask you to gather specific financial documents.
